Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the right to contest particular decisions made by the official, echoing the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
