Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry
The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chief selector Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.
"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Ideally from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Previous Setbacks
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.
He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Backup Options
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
