RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.
The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.
British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "They were among thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."
During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
